Quote from: Wall Street Journal
Amazon.com Inc. plans to release a cheaper Kindle e-reader next month, said Chief Executive Jeff Bezos, laying out a strategy to go "mass market" with an inexpensive gadget designed to do just one thing: sell digital books from Amazon.

The new Kindle features a screen with increased gray-scale contrast, a battery that lasts for a month, and a slightly smaller size. It will come in two flavors: one with Wi-Fi and 3G Internet connections selling for $189, the other with Wi-Fi only for $139. The latter will be among the cheapest wireless-equipped e-readers on the market, at least for now.

I think I had mine ordered while most spots were still talking about the  WSJ and Engadget "leaks". I went straight to Amazon and there it was on the front page, so I ordered them quick (and the new, very, very cool cover with a light that is powered by the Kindle). I'm not sure which one I'll keep (I ordered both), but I can cancel without losing my spot in line anytime in the next few weeks.  I want one of those cool covers for my other Kindle (which, sadly, probably doesn't have power in the same place, although it uses the same hinging system).

I'll probably hand-down one of my older Kindles to stepson and just keep the 189 version (but hey, I can play with the wifi only one for a month and just send it back). Unless hubby decides he has to have a newer one (although he is now used to the keys on the original one and hasn't complained about them in ages).

Everything changed fast.

About two weeks ago I told my grandson that I'd buy him a $138.00 refurbished K2 to take back to college. The next day, when I tried to order it for him, the page on Amazon said that they were sold out. After a week of checking and rechecking, I finally gave up and decided to spend the additional $50.00 to buy him a new K2. When I tried to place the order, the page said that it was temporarily out of stock. After seeing the K3 announcement I cancelled the K2 order and pre-ordered the Wi-Fi only K3 . I'll give him my K1 since he'll need the 3G and keep the K3. That way I won't have to spring for a cover (I use my netbook as an eBook reader when I'm traveling) so I'll save about 50 bucks. The only downside is that I'll be without a Kindle for a few days.

Yep, blink and Amazon changes everything.  Sounds like you got an upgrade for only a buck more than you'd planned to spend (and, as you say, no cover). I think with the return of a non-skid backing, a cover may not be necessary for some (although it is good protection if you drop it, as even I have, upon occasion). My kobo and nook are both naked, but are used only by me and mostly at home.  If you decide on a cover, though, the original design (but new size) is $35; it's the very new design with a built-in LED reading light (that needs no batteries) that is $60. I went ahead and ordered one of those also, although it apparently won't ship as quickly as the Kindle itself.

In the meantime, as you say, you can read on the netbook. I know it tires my eyes out faster, but mine works well for that and I used it quite a lot before picking up an ereader that would also do epub.

Somewhat related, but not really.   Grin   I just bought a netbook, partly for reading.  We have approximately 400 empty cases for various things sitting around this house--and not one of them fits the thing well.  I finally decided to quilt myself a case and then put it inside a small travel computer case (without the quilting it would just slide around in there.  Waaay too much empty space.)

We also have had good luck buying screen protectors for our cameras and GPS.  I highly recommend those with or without a case.  They really protect against those small scratches from everyday use and can help with the larger ones too (not cracks though.  Do not crack the screen!)
