Everything changed fast.
About two weeks ago I told my grandson that I'd buy him a $138.00 refurbished K2 to take back to college. The next day, when I tried to order it for him, the page on Amazon said that they were sold out. After a week of checking and rechecking, I finally gave up and decided to spend the additional $50.00 to buy him a new K2. When I tried to place the order, the page said that it was temporarily out of stock. After seeing the K3 announcement I cancelled the K2 order and pre-ordered the Wi-Fi only K3 . I'll give him my K1 since he'll need the 3G and keep the K3. That way I won't have to spring for a cover (I use my netbook as an eBook reader when I'm traveling) so I'll save about 50 bucks. The only downside is that I'll be without a Kindle for a few days.
Yep, blink and Amazon changes everything. Sounds like you got an upgrade for only a buck more than you'd planned to spend (and, as you say, no cover). I think with the return of a non-skid backing, a cover may not be necessary for some (although it is good protection if you drop it, as even I have, upon occasion). My kobo and nook are both naked, but are used only by me and mostly at home. If you decide on a cover, though, the original design (but new size) is $35; it's the very new design with a built-in LED reading light (that needs no batteries) that is $60. I went ahead and ordered one of those also, although it apparently won't ship as quickly as the Kindle itself.
In the meantime, as you say, you can read on the netbook. I know it tires my eyes out faster, but mine works well for that and I used it quite a lot before picking up an ereader that would also do epub.
