Amazon Announces Kindle Development Kit

Don't like the way your Kindle works? You (or another developer) can change it, using the newly announced Kindle Development Kit.

    Today, Amazon announced that it is inviting software developers to build and upload active content that will be available in the Kindle Store later this year. The new Kindle Development Kit gives developers access to programming interfaces, tools and documentation to build active content for Kindle...

There is already a waiting list to get access to the Kit, but it looks like games, interactive cookbooks and travel guides are already in the planning stages.

Unless I'm mistaken, the kit won't be available until next month.

I suspect general availability won't even be that soon. Beta users now, then the wait list developers. And before an app is "published", I suspect a vetting process (and testing for costs, since an app that generates more cell traffic than is paid for won't be allowed).

The email I got from Amazon was a bit confusing. I'll post as I learn more.
