Civil Right's Day?

LOL ... it is a NH thing.  They refused to honor MLK ... so they changed the Federal holiday.  NH is not a very liberal state.

Wow. I'm not a very liberal citizen but a state changing the name of a Federal holiday (especially to such an inaccurate name) strikes me as ludicrous.

I would like to add something here that members may want me to move to the soapbox. If so please send me a PM.

The Civil Rights movement and ultimate passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through revisionist history has been credited to the Democratic Party when in fact it was passed with broad Republican support. Here are the facts according to Wikipedia:

Totals are in "Yea-Nay" format:

The original House version:
Democratic Party: 152-96   (61%-39%)
Republican Party: 138-34   (80%-20%)

Cloture in the Senate:
Democratic Party: 44-23   (66%-34%)
Republican Party: 27-6   (82%-18%)

The Senate version:
Democratic Party: 46-21   (69%-31%)
Republican Party: 27-6   (82%-18%)

The Senate version, voted on by the House:
Democratic Party: 153-91   (63%-37%)
Republican Party: 136-35   (80%-20%)

So, will you be celebrating President's Day instead?  Oh right, that one was "removed" (along with Lincoln's birthday - that and the end of the civil war are a much bigger symbol of civil rights than the more recent ones; unless you count having a special amendment to include certain minorities into "all men" as something to be proud of). Don't forget, the Republicans ended slavery in the US.

Even if my state calls tomorrow Civil Rights day, I will continue to say Martin Luther King day and will share that with any student who will listen.  I have more to share when this topic is moved.
